What holds students back is whether or not they can survive the residency.

A lot of students tell me they are interested in surgery initially, but most do not follow through with that, not after seeing what the residents go through. Surgery residency is not for the faint of heart.

A surgeon whom I respect greatly advising me about the surgical residency program as we discuss my career plans.
