So wafflyw asked:

What do you think of this new artificial pump?

I think it is absolutely brilliant work. Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to conform to a line of thinking that we have a hard time thinking outside the box. Drs. Cohn and Frazier have looked at thousands of years of evolution in the mammalian heart and come up with a system that does equally well and that is a feat in itself. This type of breakthrough is why I love science. There are so many areas yet unexplored that we don’t even realize yet. I’m excited where this will take us.
What I am cautious about is misdiagnosis. Maybe one day a patient will come in and collapse unconscious, breathless with no pulse and we’ll assume the worst when in fact they actually have one of these. Proper identification will be important if this pulseless heart replacement is going to take off since, as they noted, by all metrics, the patient would be clinically labelled dead.
